What is ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a medical condition that affects how the brain regulates attention, activity level, and impulse control. It is not caused by laziness or lack of motivation, but rather by differences in brain function that affect executive functioning skills such as planning, organization, and focus.

ADHD can affect both children and adults. While it often begins in childhood, many individuals are not diagnosed until adolescence or adulthood. Symptoms can vary widely and may include difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, restlessness, difficulty completing tasks, or impulsive behavior.

ADHD is a manageable condition, and with the right care and support, individuals can develop effective strategies to succeed in school, work, and personal life.

Signs and symptoms of ADHD

ADHD symptoms can present in different ways depending on the individual and their age. Some individuals primarily experience difficulty with attention, while others may struggle more with hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Common symptoms include difficulty focusing on tasks, becoming easily distracted, difficulty staying organized, forgetting appointments or responsibilities, and trouble completing tasks. Some individuals may feel restless, have difficulty sitting still, or act impulsively without thinking through consequences.

In adults, ADHD may present as difficulty managing time, maintaining focus at work, staying organized, or managing multiple responsibilities. In children and adolescents, symptoms may affect school performance, behavior, and social interactions.

Recognizing these symptoms early allows for proper evaluation and effective treatment.

how ADHD is diagnosed

ADHD diagnosis involves a comprehensive medical evaluation that includes a detailed review of symptoms, medical history, and daily functioning. At CoreMed Plus, our providers take the time to understand each patient’s unique experience, including challenges at school, work, and home.

The evaluation process may include clinical interviews, standardized screening tools, and assessment of behavioral patterns. We also evaluate for other medical or psychological conditions that may affect attention and concentration to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

An accurate diagnosis is essential to developing an effective treatment plan that addresses the individual’s specific needs.

treatment options for ADHD

ADHD treatment focuses on improving attention, reducing impulsivity, and enhancing overall functioning. Treatment plans are personalized and may include medication management, behavioral strategies, and lifestyle recommendations.

Medication can help regulate brain function and improve focus, attention, and impulse control. Behavioral strategies help individuals develop skills for organization, time management, and task completion. Lifestyle modifications such as improving sleep, maintaining a structured routine, and reducing distractions can also significantly improve symptoms.

Our providers work closely with each patient to monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Dr. Mark Richter Bio

I grew up in Florida as the oldest of five sons. After earning my degree from the University of Florida, I pursued my medical education in the Dominican Republic. In 1988, I began my Family Practice Residency at the “old” Pontiac General Hospital. I have been providing medical care to the same community since 1991, first in Waterford and later at our current location in White Lake, where I continue to practice today. I take pride in being board certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians and remain committed to Primary Care. I am passionate about promoting a healthy lifestyle, including a proper “balanced” diet, exercise, exposure to healthy outdoor activities, and achieving work-life balance. I married my Medical School Sweetheart, Barbara, and we are fortunate to have two adult children and a granddaughter. We have been residents of Oakland County since 1988 and enjoy all that Michigan has to offer.
