Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It is a complex condition that can be difficult to diagnose and treat and can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. At CoreMed Plus, we offer comprehensive screening and diagnostic services for fibromyalgia and a range of treatment options to help manage the condition and improve overall health and wellness.

Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread pain and tenderness in the body’s muscles, joints, and soft tissues. Other common symptoms include fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, cognitive difficulties (often called “brain fog”), and mood disturbances such as anxiety and depression. These symptoms can be debilitating and significantly impact a person’s ability to function in daily life.

Diagnosing fibromyalgia can be challenging, as no specific tests or biomarkers can definitively confirm the presence of the condition. Diagnosis is typically based on a combination of a patient’s reported symptoms, physical examination, and ruling out other potential causes of similar symptoms. At CoreMed Plus, our healthcare professionals have experience and expertise in diagnosing fibromyalgia and ruling out other conditions that may present with similar symptoms.

Once a diagnosis is made, treatment for fibromyalgia typically involves a combination of medications, lifestyle modifications, and alternative therapies. Our team at CoreMed Plus works closely with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan that considers their unique needs, symptoms, and goals. We utilize a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, incorporating conventional medical treatments and alternative therapies such as acupuncture, massage therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Medications commonly used to treat fibromyalgia include pain relievers, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants. Lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, stress reduction techniques, and maintaining a healthy sleep schedule can also effectively manage symptoms. Alternative therapies such as acupuncture and massage therapy may also help reduce pain and promote relaxation.

At CoreMed Plus, we are committed to providing comprehensive, personalized care to each of our patients with fibromyalgia. We understand this condition’s impact on a person’s life and work to provide practical, compassionate care to help manage symptoms and improve overall health and wellness. Our healthcare professionals are dedicated to staying up-to-date on the latest research and treatment options for fibromyalgia, so we can provide our patients with the best possible care.

If you are experiencing fibromyalgia symptoms or have been diagnosed with the condition and are seeking treatment options, contact CoreMed Plus to schedule an appointment. Our experienced healthcare professionals are here to help you find relief and live a healthier, more vibrant life.

What is Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and tenderness in the muscles, joints, and soft tissues. It is a complex condition that is not fully understood and has no cure. Fibromyalgia is often associated with other symptoms, including sleep disturbances, headaches, cognitive problems, and depression.

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, but it is believed to be related to how the brain and spinal cord process pain signals. Some researchers believe that fibromyalgia may be caused by changes in neurotransmitter levels or an imbalance in the body’s stress response system.

Diagnosing fibromyalgia can be challenging, as no specific tests can confirm the condition. Diagnosis is typically based on symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination. Doctors may also perform blood tests to rule out other conditions that may cause similar symptoms.

Treatment for fibromyalgia focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life. This may include medications to manage pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, physical therapy, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Counseling and support groups can also help manage the emotional impact of fibromyalgia.

At CoreMed Plus, we understand the challenges of living with fibromyalgia and are committed to providing personalized, compassionate care and support to help manage the condition. Our team of healthcare professionals can work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your individual needs and goals, helping you to manage symptoms and improve your overall quality of life.

Fibromyalgia Treatment

Fibromyalgia is a complex condition that can be challenging to treat, as there is no cure or one-size-fits-all approach to managing symptoms. Treatment for fibromyalgia typically involves a combination of medications, lifestyle changes, and alternative therapies to manage pain, fatigue, and other symptoms.

Medications

Several medications may be used to manage the symptoms of fibromyalgia, including:

  1. Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), may be used to manage mild pain.
  2. Antidepressants: Certain antidepressants, such as amitriptyline or duloxetine, may manage pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances.
  3. Anticonvulsants: Certain anticonvulsant medications, such as pregabalin or gabapentin, may manage pain and improve sleep.
  4. Muscle Relaxants: Muscle relaxants like cyclobenzaprine or tizanidine may manage muscle stiffness and spasms.
  5. Topical Treatments: Topical treatments, such as lidocaine patches or topical creams containing capsaicin, may be used to manage pain.

Lifestyle Changes

Making healthy changes can also be important in managing fibromyalgia symptoms. These changes may include:

  1. Exercise: Regular exercises, such as low-impact activities like walking, swimming, or cycling, can help manage pain, fatigue, and other fibromyalgia symptoms.
  2. Sleep Hygiene: Practicing good sleep hygiene, such as establishing a regular sleep schedule and avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, can help improve sleep quality.
  3. Stress Management: Managing stress through techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help manage fibromyalgia symptoms.
  4. Nutrition: Eating a balanced, healthy diet can help improve overall health and manage fibromyalgia symptoms.

Alternative Therapies

In addition to medications and lifestyle changes, alternative therapies may also be used to manage fibromyalgia symptoms. These therapies may include:

  1. Acupuncture: Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to help manage pain and other symptoms.
  2. Massage Therapy: Massage therapy can help manage muscle stiffness and spasms and improve sleep quality and overall well-being.
  3. Chiropractic Care: Chiropractic care can help manage pain and improve overall spinal health.
  4. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy can help manage symptoms such as depression and anxiety and improve coping skills.

Meet Dr. Mark Richter

I grew up in Florida as the oldest of five sons. After earning my degree from the University of Florida, I pursued my medical education in the Dominican Republic. In 1988, I began my Family Practice Residency at the “old” Pontiac General Hospital. I have been providing medical care to the same community since 1991, first in Waterford and later at our current location in White Lake, where I continue to practice today.

I take pride in being board certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians and remain committed to Primary Care. I am passionate about promoting a healthy lifestyle, including a proper “balanced” diet, exercise, exposure to healthy outdoor activities, and achieving work-life balance. I married my Medical School Sweetheart, Barbara, and we are fortunate to have two adult children and a granddaughter. We have been residents of Oakland County since 1988 and enjoy all that Michigan has to offer.
